Deborah Brown

Deborah Brown is one of America’s highly esteemed educators and has shared her gift and love of teaching for 44 years. Through the decades, she has remained a believer that with compassion, patience and dedication, all children can achieve academic excellence.

Her personal story of resilience humbly begins in Vinita, Oklahoma, where she was born to Virgil and Anna Smith and reared with 13 siblings in a house with no running water.

Although one of the youngest, Brown was the first to graduate from college in her family, receiving a degree in education at Northeastern State University.

Since her humble beginnings in Vinita, Brown has become the founder of Tulsa publicly free charter schools the first, her name sake, Deborah Brown Community School and  her second, Sankofa School of Creative and Performing Arts.

Both schools are located in the heart of downtown Tulsa, and are both high achieving  and academically ranked schools.
